Note from Henry: I’ve been meaning to try writing a mini story on the site for a while now and today was that day. I hope you enjoy it. Thanks for reading!
It had snowed over the weekend so Mom parked the Jeep in the driveway along with my car so if the snowplow came down the street they could get through with no one in the way.
Fast forward to today. I was going to leave home at 9am, drive an hour, and be at work by 10am. Easy! I went to go check the key tin only to discover some devastating news…the Jeep key was missing. No problems, maybe it’s somewhere in the house? After a brief search I decided that it was not in the house. So I called Mom.
At my house we have a tin with all the important keys in it. Some people have hooks. Some have a bowl. We have a tin. I’d say at least 80% of the tin is miscellaneous keys or keys that don’t have a home anymore. Anyways, it’s the first spot to look when searching for car keys.
Oh no! Mom has the key to the Jeep with her at work in Boston! Since the Jeep was blocking my car in the driveway that meant that I couldn’t drive either car. That left two options: Uber or train into Boston to pick up the key from Mom. Taking an Uber would likely be expensive so I opted for the train. The plan was to take the train to North Station, then take a subway to Mom’s office, get the key, then take a subway back to North Station, and finally a train home. Eventually I’d be able to move the Jeep and drive an hour to work.
I walked to the train around 9:05am and almost missed it. I’d read the schedule wrong! The train came at 9:11am and not 9:22am. I ran up the stairs and in a huff made it just before it pulled away.
Once I got to North Station I went straight towards the Orange Line. You see, the Green Line is closed for repairs for the next 2 weeks, so my options were rather limited. The next train home is 10:20am so I had around an hour to make it to Mom’s office and back before the next train left. Challenge accepted.
It was about 3 stops to the correct station and once I got out it was less than 5 minutes until I had the key.
Once I got it, I headed straight back to the Orange Line, waited 2 minutes for a subway, and headed back to North Station.
I made it with around 20 minutes to spare and so I spent some of that treating myself to a donut from Dunkin’ and drafting this story.
The train came at 10:20am as expected and pretty soon we were steaming back towards Winchester! Once at the station it was a quick 6 minute walk home. (Maybe 7 because I was being careful about ice on the sidewalk).
Once home I moved the Jeep, hopped in my car, and was finally on my way to work.
What a morning! If I wasn’t awake before, I am now.
